From the doors of EQWIP HUBs in Mwanza, you can see a large steel bin with the words “chupa tu” – which means plastic bottles in Swahili – written on a white sign. Inside the hub, there are three disposal bins: one for plastic, one for organic waste, and one for garbage. Walk across campus towards Lake Victoria and you’ll see a concrete waste disposal site. Mselem applied for the Youth Innovation Fund in round 3 but unfortunately, he didn’t make it. This sparked the idea for his food stand, Juice na Bites, which was located in Buzuruga. Esther is a seamstress who produces colorful custom batiki (fabrics). She joined EQWIP HUBs to expand her creative business. A mother and provider, Esther had a goal of being able to earn more money to support her family.
