International Women's Day 2018

par Andrew Inglis, 9 mars 2018, 03:22 AM

International Women’s Day is observed all over the world and brings together government, civil society and the public in conversation and celebration for women’s social, cultural, economic and political achievements. It marks this progress while also acknowledging how far the movement for gender equality still has to go to ensure the rights of women around the world are granted.

While we currently have no cohorts running at the EQWIP HUBs Mwanza, staff, Canadian and local Volunteers thought it would still be important to do something to recognize International Women’s Day.

We had a group discussion on female role models in our lives, barriers to gender equality and actions we could take to reduce gender inequality in society. The discussion was lively and we learnt a lot from each other about the context in Tanzania compared to Canada. Overall, our main-takeaway was to challenge the assumptions and gender norms we hold on to in our daily lives, and to be champions for women and their voices.

For group and individual photos, we each held a poster that had a different empowering statement pertaining to the theme for International Women’s Day this year: Press for Progress.
