Stories from EQWIP HUBs Mwanza - Steven

by Andrew Inglis in Employment, 8 May 2018, 03:53 AM

Steven Joel Mwamwita is a stellar example of what EQWIP HUBs strives to do for youth around the world. He entered the program without employment, but through our training and connections he built while visiting the HUB, he is now employed with a wood and metalworking shop as their accountant nearby the HUB. Steven was referred to EQWIP HUBs Mwanza by one of his relatives who was a graduate of EQWIP HUBs training.

Prior to the training, Steven spent a year without employment. Steven had applied to college but he was not accepted and it was a very challenging time in his life since he had to contemplate spending a year at home. Additionally, when he was contemplating a year without employment, he found the prospect of a year without employment or education daunting because of how unhealthy it is to be idle. However, he instead applied to EQWIP HUBs which was fortunate since his grandfather fell ill and his father lost his job so it was fortunate that he was close to home to support his family.

He was faced with a lot of questions about how to proceed in life without a college education which is highly valued in Tanzanian society, but EQWIP HUBs was able to show him a way forward in life without a college education. He learned many things from EQWIP HUBs including how to use a computer, how to continue learning for life, public speaking, and humorously, he identifies that he learned how to know when a class is asleep and what to do.

When asked about success, he attributes it to EQWIP saying “The education I got through EQWIP HUBs can be applied in my job as an accountant at a woodworking shop near the HUB. EQWIP HUBs has contributed greatly to where I am now. I can say it was God’s plan for me to join EQWIP HUBs so I can get an education.”

We wish Steven well in his work and look forward to seeing him in the morning as we come to work. Congratulations Steven!
